Lola trained as an Active Birth Teacher and Childbirth Educator after the birth of her first child. Antenatal and Postnatal Yoga were an integral part of the training. The main teachers and mentors were Janet Balaskas, Lolly Stirk and Yvonne Moore to whom Lola has been grateful for introducing her into the wonders of Birth and beyond.
Before having her own children Lola was at the home birth of some of her nieces and nephews and looked after her sister-in-law during her recovery. She considers this the introduction to what became, after years of being a birth companion to women birthing at home, her role as a Birth and Postnatal Doula.
Through her work as a Doula Lola has observed that women who prepare for birth with yoga tend to respond more easily and effectively to their bodies during labour. Her work as an Active Birth and YogaBirth Teacher and Birth Educator, is informed by evidence and also by her personal experience as a Doula.
Along the years Lola has worked in different settings of the community. She has run her own pregnancy yoga classes; worked for several years at a private hospital (St John’s and St Elizabeth); She has run pregnancy yoga classes and childbirth preparation at Children Centres; She has worked with young mothers; She has, for many years, volunteered for a charity that works with women in prison and vulnerable women in the community (Birth Companions).
Lola is amazed and very happy to notice that after more than 20 years of nurturing pregnant and postnatal women, and their partners, through her work, She still feels very passionate and excited and is grateful to have this privilege.
Lola is one of the tutors and mentors on The YogaBirth Teacher Training Course and an assistant teacher on the Janet Balaskas, Active Birth Teacher Training. She is pleased to be sharing her knowledge and awareness with the new generation of teachers.
In her spare time, she is a mother to five children (four boys and one girl). She feels very blessed to have had 5 beautiful and straightforward home births (she was also born at home back in her country of origin, Mexico)… and finally, she is a wife to a man, a Kenyan one!
