Pregnancy Classes

Pregnancy is a wonderful time to practise yoga. It helps keep the body supple without straining. Yoga breathing helps you to relax, improves circulation and will help you relieve the pain of labour in childbirth. YogaBirth classes provide “not just an exercise class”, but offer pregnancy yoga together with a wealth of knowledge about pregnancy and birth. This helps you to prepare for the transition to parenthood, both physically and emotionally.

YogaBirth teachers offer regular weekly classes for pregnant women. Our classes include:

  • Yoga

  • Relaxation

  • Breathing

  • Pelvic floor exercises

  • Refreshments and a discussion

  • Information about pregnancy and birth

YogaBirth offers a safe, gentle and integrated form of yoga, carefully adapted for women to practice from twelve weeks of pregnancy up to the birth. Adjustments and modifications can be individually tailored so that no previous experience of yoga is necessary to join a class.

Yoga

Yoga brings a sense of well-being as well as physical fitness. It helps you to relax and focus; by practicing yoga you can tune in to the changes in your body as your baby grows inside you. Many of the common discomforts that might arise during pregnancy may be eased by the yoga, such as: -

  • Backache

  • Pelvic pain

  • Heartburn

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome

  • Leg cramp

  • Sore ribs

  • Shortness of breath

  • Constipation

“ I am so busy with my toddler most of the time that this class is a weekly chance to tune into the new baby growing inside me”

Preparation for Labour

Regular attendance at the classes will help you to develop confidence in your body’s ability to give birth. As well as yoga, you will practice positions and movements, visualisation and breathing techniques to help you to stay calm and focused during labour.

“The breathing really helped… I just focused on my breath rather than the pain and that’s what got me through”

Optimal Foetal Positioning

YogaBirth teachers have become increasingly aware of the importance of encouraging the baby into the best position for labour. YogaBirth classes include movements to practice in late pregnancy to encourage the baby’s spine towards the front of the belly. This can lead to a shorter and more straightforward labour and birth.

Support in Classes

Class discussions, sharing experiences, visiting speakers, returning new mums all help to give reassurance to class members and help them make decisions about options for the oncoming birth.

“Attending the yoga classes gave me confidence in my labour to know that I wanted to keep moving and not be stuck on the bed”

YogaBirth teachers are professional specialist pregnancy yoga teachers, providing a high level of support during pregnancy and excellent preparation for childbirth. Our methods have evolved over the last 30 years of Active Birth and YogaBirth.
